Professional Wetland Identification and Boundary Mapping

Wetlands can significantly affect how a property may be developed, improved, or managed. Before purchasing land, designing a site, or beginning construction, it is important to determine whether wetlands are present and where their boundaries are located.

Quality Testing and Engineering, Inc. (QTE) provides professional wetland delineation services for developers, property owners, engineers, contractors, municipalities, and public agencies. Our team evaluates site conditions, identifies potential wetland areas, and clearly documents findings to support responsible planning and regulatory compliance.

When Is a Wetland Delineation Needed?

A wetland delineation may be required or recommended before:

  • Commercial or residential development
  • Road and utility construction
  • Property acquisition
  • Site grading or excavation
  • Drainage improvements
  • Agricultural or land-management projects
  • Environmental permitting
  • Stream or habitat restoration
  • Expanding an existing facility

Identifying wetlands early can help prevent permitting delays, unexpected redesigns, and unauthorized impacts to protected areas.

What Defines a Wetland?

Wetlands are identified using three primary environmental indicators:

Hydrophytic Vegetation

The site contains plant species adapted to growing in saturated or frequently flooded conditions.

Hydric Soils

The soil exhibits characteristics that develop after prolonged periods of saturation or reduced oxygen levels.

Wetland Hydrology

The area experiences surface water, flooding, a high water table, or saturated soil for a sufficient portion of the growing season.

The presence of standing water alone does not necessarily mean an area qualifies as a regulated wetland. A professional field evaluation is needed to examine all relevant conditions.

Our Wetland Delineation Process

Preliminary Site Review

Our team reviews available maps, aerial photographs, soil surveys, drainage information, and other relevant property records to identify potential wetland areas.

Field Investigation

Qualified environmental professionals inspect the site and document vegetation, soil characteristics, hydrology, topography, and other environmental indicators.

Boundary Identification

When wetlands are identified, their boundaries are marked in the field based on observed conditions and applicable delineation methods.

Data Collection and Mapping

QTE records field observations and prepares maps showing the location and approximate extent of identified wetlands within the project area.

Delineation Report

We provide a clear report summarizing our methods, field findings, site conditions, data points, photographs, and delineated wetland boundaries.

Supporting Permitting and Project Planning

Wetlands may be regulated by federal, state, or local agencies depending on their location, characteristics, and connection to other waters. A wetland delineation provides the technical information needed to determine how wetland areas may affect a proposed project.

Completing the delineation early allows engineers and developers to evaluate design options, avoid or minimize wetland impacts, and begin coordinating any necessary permits or agency reviews.

Why Choose QTE?

Quality Testing and Engineering combines careful field investigation with practical environmental consulting. We work closely with property owners, developers, engineers, and project managers to provide reliable information that supports informed land-use decisions.

Our straightforward reports help project teams understand site constraints, evaluate development options, and move forward with greater confidence.
